Teaching

At FIU, I teach both graduate and undergraduate courses on early modern Europe and medieval Europe, including courses on early modern Spain.

2017 Oxford January Term, Austin College

In January 2017, I took ten Austin College students to Oxford for my study abroad course, “Oxford in History and Literature.” In a classroom at Pembroke College, Oxford University, we studied how the medieval university, the English Reformation, and the English Civil War are part of Oxford’s landscape. Next, we discussed Lewis and Tolkien at their favorite pub, and Alice in Wonderland at Alice’s well. The course included excursions to Oxford Castle, Warwick Castle, Stonehenge, the Tower of London, and the Globe Theater.

2025 (Spring A) Study Abroad to Genoa, Florida International University

Along with two FIU staff, I was responsible for thirteen FIU undergraduates during the first half of Spring Semester 2025. In my course, EUH 4434 Italy during the Renaissance, students visited the Commenda di Pre to learn about the medieval Mediterranean economy and the crusades, the Doria palace (Palazzo del Principe) to learn about Charles V’s relationship with his admiral, Andrea Doria, and about the art and architecture of Renaissance and Baroque Genoa at the Strada Nuova art museums. I taught students about the Medici family in front of their tombs in Florence. This immersive program introduced students to everyday life in a cold and windy Mediterranean port city, its language, culture, and history.
